Spoiler alert: This post contains plot details from the 300th episode of Supernatural.
It only took 300 episodes, but Sam and Dean finally got to experience what a family dinner feels like on Supernatural. After a magic pearl gave Dean his heart’s desire and brought Dad back, the four Winchesters were able to sit around a table and share a meal. And although the family reunion was short-lived — you can’t mess with time without there being consequences, hence the decision to send Dad back — both Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) got to share a long overdue moment with their father (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Dean got to let John know that he’s found a family for himself, and Sam, well, Sam got to forgive.
But the episode ended with an emotional goodbye to John as life went back to normal, which of course means the boys now have to once again figure out how to save the world (and Dean). But perhaps this experience will help them with that. “I think it’s going to be fuel for them,” Ackles says of the family reunion. “For both brothers, to have a family unit is something they’ve never truly experienced, especially Sam. To catch a glimpse of that and to have a moment of reprieve from the life that they’ve been buried in for so many years, and to be able to sit back and see their mom and dad together, have a moment with Dad face-to-face, they may not have been ready for it, but it’s something I feel will give them a boost, a bit of a fill-up.”
Padalecki adds, “I feel like it will almost solidify them in how they feel because they had the chance for a Faustian deal, they had that chance to be like, ‘We’ll be fine. We can live in the bunker. We have our family,’ but they chose to stay the course. They strayed for a little bit and went, ‘That sounds great, but you know what, we’re willing to sacrifice even this for what we’re doing in our reality.’ So in some way shape or form, it almost strengthens who they are and who they’ve been for many many seasons, so I think it will change them just in strengthening and solidifying their resolve.”
And they’ll need that strength in order to deal with Michael.
