Oscar nominee Amy Adams on why Vice was one of her biggest challenges ever

On Feb. 24, winners will be crowned at the 91st Academy Awards. But before the red carpet is rolled out and envelopes are opened, Entertainment Weekly has inside intel on the 2019 nominees. Keep checking back at EW.com this week for spotlights on contenders in all the major categories.

Amy Adams

Starring In: Vice

Age: 44

Oscar past: 5 nominations, 0 wins

Role call: Lynne Cheney, dedicated wife of Dick Cheney

Christian Bale’s Dick Cheney may be Vice’s main player, but his wife, Lynne, is his loyal Lady Macbeth: The only thing she might be more devoted to than her husband is her husband’s career. Amy Adams wasn’t originally sure that she was the right fit to play the former Second Lady, but the idea of tackling the same woman over multiple decades intrigued her (and scored her a Best Supporting Actress nomination). “It presented an amazing challenge, and that’s something that always excites me: thinking I might fail,” Adams says.

On set, the actress would get into character by debating politics with writer-director Adam McKay, speaking — and singing! — in Lynne’s voice. “My favorite thing to do was, ‘Lynne sings hits from the ’80s,’ ” she says. “Like, ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me!’ ” Perhaps we should expect a future Grammy nomination as well?
