LIVE: Samsung unveils new Galaxy phones, watches, and more

Samsung Unpacked 2019

  • Samsung just announced a slew of new gadgets at its Unpacked event on Wednesday in San Francisco.
  • We saw five (!) new phones: the Galaxy S10E, the Galaxy S10, the Galaxy S10 Plus, the Galaxy S10 5G, and the Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s foldable smartphone.
  • Here’s a minute-by-minute breakdown of everything Samsung unveiled at its big event.

2:02 p.m.: Right off the bat, Samsung is showing off a folding phone!

Samsung

2:04 p.m.: Samsung’s folding phone is called the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung

2:05 p.m.: “With the Galaxy Fold, we’re creating a new dimension for your phone. We’re not just defining a category — it defies category. When it’s folded, it has a 4.6-inch display. It’s compact and perfectly portable.”

Samsung

2:05 p.m.: “But when the device opens up, the world does too.” The Galaxy Fold opens up into a 7.3-inch tablet.

Samsung

2:06 p.m.: It comes in four colors: black, silver, green, and blue. You can even personalize the hinge color.

Samsung

2:07 p.m.: When closed, the Galaxy Fold can fit in the palm in your hand.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:07 p.m.: But when you open the phone, Samsung’s Infinity Flex display lets you enjoy a much larger view — and it’s powerful enough to run as many as three apps at once.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:08 p.m.: The Galaxy Fold features 12 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, and Universal Flash Storage 3.0, which should mean very quick and robust performance.

Samsung

2:09 p.m.: The phone has a system of six cameras: three on the back, two on the inside, and one on the front.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:10 p.m.: You can switch between the screens without missing a beat. If you’re using an app on the front, you’ll be able to see that app when you open the phone.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:12 p.m.: Here’s Google Maps running on the front of the phone.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:13 p.m.: When you open it, Google Maps expands into a full tablet view.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:14 p.m.: You can watch YouTube videos.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:14 p.m.: You can also use three apps at once when using the Galaxy Fold in tablet mode.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:15 p.m.: The Galaxy Fold will not be cheap — it starts at $1,980. That’s the starting price! (Yes, this is still a smartphone we’re talking about.)

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:16 p.m.: The Galaxy Fold will be available on April 26. We’ll add more details about availability when we get them.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:18 p.m.: DJ Koh, Samsung’s mobile chief, takes the stage. (No, he’s not an actual disc jockey.) He insists the era of smartphone innovation is not over.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:18 p.m.: Koh has the new Galaxy Fold smartphone on him, which is pretty cool.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:19 p.m.: (Koh’s inner monologue: “This phone costs HOW much?”)

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:25 p.m.: This event went from 15 minutes of exciting announcements to 10 minutes of Koh talking about Samsung’s collaboration and innovation. Thankfully, he’s about to introduce the Galaxy S10.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:28 p.m.: Samsung introduces the new Galaxy S10 phones in a video, verifying nearly every leak we’ve seen of these phones over the past two months.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:29 PM: Koh shows off the Galaxy S10 Plus and introduces Suzanne De Silva, Samsung’s marketing chief.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:30 p.m.: “We’re not just here to celebrate the last 10 years, but to lay the groundwork for the next 10 years,” she says. “And that starts with the Galaxy S10.”

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:31 p.m.: The front-facing cameras are embedded into the full edge-to-edge display. Samsung says it built a proprietary laser-cutter to make room for the camera in the display and packed sensors and camera technology into the screen.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:33 p.m.: Samsung says the Galaxy S10’s Amoled display supports HDR10+, has 42% less blue light for more comfort, and has the most color-accurate phone display in the world.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:34 p.m.: The Galaxy S10 features a fingerprint sensor underneath the phone’s display. It uses ultrasonic rather than optical scanning, so it works better in bright sunlight and wet conditions. It’s also super secure.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:36 p.m.: The Galaxy S10 comes in four colors or two “ceramic” tones: black or white.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:37 p.m.: Samsung says the triple rear-camera system in the Galaxy S10 means the phone can adapt to any situation: day or night, zoomed in or out, close or ultrawide shots. Samsung compares it to a professional photographer changing lenses on the fly.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:39 p.m.: The ultrawide camera supports ultrawide panoramas, so your photos stretch to the full length of the screen — no black bars on the top or bottom.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:40 p.m.: The phone can recognize up to 30 scenes — like a nature scene, or a sunrise — and automatically adjust the image so you take the perfect photo.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:42 p.m.: On the video side, the Galaxy S10 shoots videos in HDR10+ for more brightness and dynamic range. The camera uses tonal-mapping techniques to optimize the color for every scene. Shooting video is also more stable than on the Galaxy S9.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:48 p.m.: The front-facing camera on the Galaxy S10 Plus features two lenses for better depth-of-field shots.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:50 p.m.: Mosseri takes a quick on-stage selfie with Koh and instantly posts it on Instagram.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:51 p.m.: “Wow, epic selfie, guys,” De Silva says as she comes back on stage.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:54 p.m.: Samsung’s Drew Blackard takes the stage to talk about how performance has improved from the Galaxy S9, saying that the Galaxy S10’s CPU is 29% better than the last generation and that graphics are up to 37% better.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:55 p.m.: The Galaxy S10 is now much smarter and better about power consumption, which should lead to “all-day” battery life, and wireless-charging improvements mean it will charge up to 36% faster than before, he says.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:57 p.m.: Blackard says the Galaxy S10 is the first phone with WiFi 6, allowing for up to 20% improved performance versus the Galaxy S9.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

2:58 p.m.: There are three models of the Galaxy S10: the S10E, the S10, and the S10 Plus.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3 p.m.: Here are the three phones side by side.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:01 p.m.: Here’s the Galaxy S9 next to the new Galaxy S10 on the right. Notice the screen difference.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:02 p.m.: Samsung says the phones will be available starting Friday, March 8, online and in Samsung Experience stores.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:03 p.m.: Samsung invites Elina Vives, a senior marketing director, on stage to talk about how the Galaxy S10 works with other Samsung devices.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:04 p.m.: Samsung plays a brief video unveiling the Galaxy Buds, wireless earbuds with sound by Harman’s AKG unit. They have dual microphones to capture your voice in any setting, so you can take calls in busy areas. They’re built for all-day use, and Samsung says they can take up to five hours of calls or play six hours of music on a single charge.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:06 p.m.: Bixby’s back! Samsung’s virtual assistant is supported on the new Galaxy Buds, so you can ask it to play music or tell you the weather.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:07 p.m.: The Galaxy Buds support wireless charging — you can even charge them on the back of your Galaxy S10!

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:08 p.m.: The Galaxy Buds will be available on Friday, March 8, the same day the Galaxy S10 launches.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:09 p.m.: Samsung introduces two new wearables: the Galaxy Watch Active, and the Galaxy Watch Fit. The Watch Active supports a range of apps and watch faces, as well as fitness tracking, while the Galaxy Fit (also durable and water-resistant) is a straight-up fitness tracker that can last about a week on a single charge.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:10 p.m.: The Galaxy Watch Active and Watch Fit also support sleep tracking, including REM and deep sleep, so you can track your health even when you’re unconscious. Both wearables can also track your stress levels.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:12 p.m.: Samsung shows how easily the Galaxy Buds pair with Samsung’s phone and tablet, and how you can switch between the two depending on need.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:14 p.m.: Samsung shows how you can also use the Galaxy S10 to wirelessly charge your devices, including your Galaxy Buds or Galaxy Watch Active.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:16 p.m.: Blackard comes back on stage to talk about an essential component of this new Samsung ecosystem: 5G.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:17 p.m.: While 3G introduced internet to phones and 4G improved upon it, 5G will be roughly 20 times as fast as 4G and capable of 1 millisecond of latency (the time between two reactions), opening up possibilities in remote surgery, cloud gaming, and autonomous driving.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:18 p.m.: Blackard unveils another new phone: the Galaxy S10 5G.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:19 p.m.: The Galaxy S10 5G features a 6.7-inch Amoled display and a 4,500-mAh battery — the biggest screen and the biggest battery in a Galaxy S device ever. It also has a cutting-edge camera system for 3D depth sensing.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:21 p.m.: Blackard invites Koh back on stage to talk about the importance of 5G.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:26 p.m.: Koh invites Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg on stage. Vestberg says that he’s excited to bring 5G to the market and that Verizon customers will be the first to have Samsung’s 5G Galaxy S10 phone.

Samsung Unpacked 2019

3:30 p.m.: Koh returns to the stage. “This could not have been possible without thousands of great partners and millions of amazing customers,” he says. “Our commitment to you, to all our customers, is to create the world’s most advanced mobile experiences.” Koh thanks everyone for coming.
