When it comes to the keto diet, you may think alcohol is totally out of the question, but we’re here to tell you that doesn’t have to be the case.

The ketogenic diet focuses on eating healthy fats and limiting carbs. The goal is to transition into and maintain a state of ketosis, where the body runs on ketones instead of glucose, resulting in increased focus, elevated energy levels, and sometimes fat loss.

Just like with any new diet, it can seem hard to stick to your plan and stay social, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are a few beverage options for those of you on the keto diet, ranked from greatest to least amount of carbs.

Yes, even beer can be keto. Not all beer, however, as the average bottle contains about 10 to 15 grams of carbs. However, many light brands born out of the desire for a healthier brew have relatively low carb counts, making them suitable for keto.

Some keto-friendly options include Miller 64 or Rolling Rock Green Light, each with 2.4 grams of carbs per bottle, or Miller Lite and Beck’s Premier Light, each at 3.2 grams.

The health benefits of wine have been celebrated for quite some time. For example, moderate consumption of red wine has been linked to improved cardiovascular health. When it comes to keto, dry wines do contain carbs, but it’s typically low enough—averaging 2 to 5 grams per glass—to have a minimal impact.

Some red wines that are acceptable include pinot noir (3.4 grams of carbs per glass), merlot (3.7 grams), and Zinfandel (4.2 grams). Some low-carb white wines include brut Champagne (2.8 grams), Chardonnay (3.1 grams), and pinot blanc (2.85 grams).

Unflavored, unsweetened spirits

Each of these contains zero grams of carbs, so vodka, whiskey, gin, and tequila all pass the keto test. Just be sure to avoid any sugary mixers or chasers such as soda or fruit juice, as they’ll quickly knock you out of ketosis.

Straight shots not your thing? You’ve got a couple of options. For example, a dry martini is certified keto-friendly, as it’s made with gin or vodka and dry vermouth. Throw in a splash of olive brine to make it dirty, and it’s still keto-friendly. Since neither option contains sugar (sensing a pattern here?), the carb count still remains at or near zero. Vodka soda with lime can also be a refreshing choice when staying low-carb.
